Vaccination Clinic (1)

On July 13th, 2015, the Central Missouri Humane Society took in five stray puppies found abandoned at Oakland Park in Columbia, on one of the hottest days so far this summer. Temperatures reached into the nineties on Monday, with a heat index close to one-hundred degrees. The puppies, discovered by a civilian, had been crammed inside of a small crate with no food, water, or room to move around. Covered in their own filth, each of the puppies were severely emaciated and dehydrated. The Central Missouri Humane Society worked quickly to provide care to these animals. Unfortunately, one of the puppies succumbed to his suffering and passed away overnight in the loving care of a staff member.

“This has been one of the worst cases of neglect I have seen in almost twelve years of working at the shelter,” says Executive Director Julie Aber. “Even through all of their suffering, these puppies have nothing but love to give. Their resilience and capacity to trust is absolutely astounding. ”

The Central Missouri Humane Society expects the remaining puppies to make a full recovery. Boone County Animal Control is investigating this incident and anyone with any information is encouraged to call 573.449.1888.
